About Decipher
Why I built Decipher
I made Decipher because I wanted a better way to work on classical and historical ciphers without handing the whole puzzle to an automatic solver.
The idea
Cipher solving often leaves you with two bad options: do every repetitive step by hand, or let a program jump straight to an answer. I wanted something in between. The Workbench counts, arranges, transforms, and compares, while you decide what to try and what the evidence means.
Choosing a Challenge
Every Challenge stands on its own, so there is no prescribed order. Featured is simply a selection I think is worth showing at the moment. Tutorials name and teach a cipher; other Challenges may leave identification as part of the puzzle.
Historical material
I try to trace historical material to an archival or research source and say plainly when something has been adapted, reconstructed, normalized, damaged, disputed, or left unsolved. I will not always get everything right, so factual corrections and better sources are welcome at contact@decipher.nu.
About me
I'm Niclas Geuken, and Decipher is my independent project. I build it because I enjoy old ciphers, the process of solving them, and the tools that make that process less tedious without taking it over.
Decipher is still growing. If you like what you see, you can buy me a coffee.
