Knowing the family gives you a first idea of what to look for. Caesar and general simple substitution keep monoalphabetic patterns. Vigenère, Beaufort, Variant Beaufort, and Gronsfeld leave clues about the repeating Key. Columnar transposition keeps symbol counts while moving positions.
